HeadCount is an organization that marries music with politics and brings people together to make change. Ten years ago today, Andy Bernstein and Marc Brownstein (bassist of the Disco Biscuits) started HeadCount to take action into their own hands and move the music scene.
“I was working as a sportswriter at the time and doing an interview, when the subject turned to the state of the world and how messed up it was… Then it hit me. If I could just get people to vote who attended the same concerts I did, that’s a difference I could personally make. I emailed Marc [Brownstein] with the idea and he got right back to me with two words: ‘I’m in.’” – HeadCount Executive Director Andy Bernstein
What started as an idea sparked a movement. HeadCount now has volunteers all across the nation encouraging music fans at concerts (from DMB to Phish) to register to vote, right then and there. Before the 2012 election, HeadCount had registered over 48,500 voters by the deadline. No other volunteer-led organization in the U.S. came even close to that total. These guys deserve major recognition for influencing so many people to vote and ushering real change in our country.
This cause is very dear to Ticketfly’s heart, and we’re proud they’ve come so far.
“HeadCount is an amazing organization, and one which I feel lucky to be a part of. It is incredibly gratifying to be involved with an organization that empowers kids to have their voices heard. It has been a great run thus far and there are more great things in store for HeadCount over the next decade. Congrats to Andy, Marc and the rest of the team!” – Ticketfly CEO Andrew Dreskin
