The year was 2006, Nelly Furtado’s Promiscuous and Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie were on top of the charts and a ‘little spot’ with a boy and girl’s name opened in the Fishtown section of Philly – Johnny Brenda’s. Named after the original owner, a Philadelphia boxer, the venue draws a mixed crowd of artists, musicians, and even Penn students from across town.
Operating as a bar, restaurant, and music venue this place is a hole-in-one. Lucky for us (and you) PA happens to be one of the greatest beer-making regions in the US. Johnny Brenda’s serves all-draft, all local beers. They have a rotating beer menu that coincides with the seasons and time of year and did we mention they even have hand pumps (yup for the true beer aficionado). The following breweries are represented at JB’s: Philadelphia Brewing Company, Flying Fish Brewing Company, and Stoudt’s Brewing Company.
JB’s kitchen is open seven days a week from 11 am to 1 am. But don’t ask for a menu, it’s written on the wall! Not only do they have traditional bar food, but also serve grilled octopus and baba ganoush. So our non-meat eating friends don’t have to feel left out. Oh and don’t skip dessert here, cause you will surely regret it. Patrons have dined on chocolate chip bread pudding, peach pie, fresh melon and good ‘ole doughnuts.
Johnny Brenda’s one of Philly’s best places to see a live show with a world-class sound system, a balcony, and top notch musicians rolling through. Ticket prices here are also a gem ranging between $10-15. You can’t be that with a baseball bat (S/O to the Phillies, 1st place in the National League).
In celebration of their 5th birthday Johnny Brenda’s is giving away an ‘Evening Out’ which includes a pair of tickets to a show plus dinner and drinks. All you have to do is ‘Like’ JB’s Facebook page and you’re entered! (If you already Like JB’s, just click on the “5th Anniversary Contest” in the left-hand column on their page.)
Also in honor of their 5 year milestone, Johnny Brenda’s has some special shows coming up: Purples, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Meg Baird, and Blood Feathers.
