Festival season is no longer confined to the sweltering summer months. There are awesome festivals happening year-round—some starting as early as this week! Many of the best music gatherings in North America are powered by Ticketfly and we couldn’t be more psyched. Tell your festie besties and mark your calendars for these upcoming ‘fly fests.
There’s a popular episode from Aziz Ansari’s hit Netflix comedy Master of None where Ansari’s character takes a date on a trip to Nashville. The trip ultimately goes well, and they have a great time dancing and thrift shopping and doing cutesy hipster stuff. But, with all due respect to Nashville, we can only imagine how much more fun the episode would have been if they took a slight detour to Memphis instead. Particularly in the month of May.
While all nonprofit organizations do work to better their communities, few do it quite like Memphis In May International Festival. The community-based group goes big and bold like a Tennessee rack of ribs, hosting a series of righteous festivals and events during the month of its namesake.
Festivities begin with the star-studded Beale Street Music Festival from April 29-May 1. This year’s lineup features some of the biggest names in music, from Neil Young and Paul Simon to Meghan Trainor and Jason Derulo. The festival was named among Travel + Leisure’s “2016 Music Festivals Worth Traveling For” and listed among Fuse TV’s “Top 22 Music Festivals for 2016.” Continue reading
Next week, event professionals from across the globe will unite to share new ideas, discuss trends, and cultivate creativity during the International Festivals & Events Association’s 60th Anniversary Convention and Expo. The ‘fly is hitting the road on our way to Tucson, AZ to be in attendance.
This year our own Head of Festivals, Jeff Kreinik, will be among the featured speakers during Transacting Success: Options, Expectations and Effectiveness for Handling Secure Financial Exchanges. That’s a long way of saying: Let’s talk payments in the digital age. The panel will be held Tuesday, September 22 at 10:15 a.m.
After months of planning and anticipation, Burning Man is almost here! Our excitement reached a new high this week as members of our team left to help set up ticketing operations at Black Rock City.
There is a long history between the Ticketfly and Burning Man communities, with roots that were planted way before we announced our ticketing and technology partnership earlier this year. Many members of the Ticketfly team have attended the gathering on the playa for years, and as an organization we share Burning Man’s ethos.
Ticketfly team members have collectively been to Burning Man over 30 times since 1998.
For some employees, the Burning Man experience has been truly transformational. For Valerie, our VP of Operations, Burning Man helped put her life into perspective and had a profound impact on her personal and professional journey:
My last year at Burning Man was 2001. When I came back to San Francisco, September 11th happened right afterward… between the inspiration one finds at Burning Man and the sadness of 9/11, it hit me pretty hard that life is way too short for regrets. I decided then to go back to school and get a degree, which was something that had nagged me for a long time. I often wonder where I would be if one of those two things never happened.
When I applied for a job at TicketWeb in 2002, I included Burning Man Cafe volunteering as a note on my resume. I’m convinced that it helped me get the job, because we talked about Burning Man a lot during my interview!
Ellis, a Director on our Sales team, was similarly moved by his travels to the Black Rock Desert:
Ever since Ticketfly launched in Canada last January (our first international venture), we’ve been partnering with some of the greatest venues, festivals, and promoters up in the True North. We’re pleased our Canadian roster already boasts the best in the biz. NOW Magazine, Toronto’s alternative weekly, just published their “Best of” readers’ poll for this year, and it’s no surprise a number of our partners made the cut. Congrats guys!
Best Blues Bar: Dakota Tavern
Best Live Music Club: Horseshoe Tavern
Best Concert Promoter: Inertia Entertainment
Entertainment can be expensive. Going to festivals and shows on a regular basis adds up, but sometimes the best things in life really are free… even major music festivals. Virgin Mobile FreeFest, the largest free recurring music event in the U.S., returns to Merriweather Post Pavilion September 21st, 2013 for its 8th year (and 5th year free).
Admission won’t cost you a dime, but Virgin is asking for donations to raise money for Sasha Bruce Youthwork–an organization dedicated to helping homeless youth. Donations from past festivals helped build the RE*Generation House, a beautiful transitional living center in Washington, D.C. (check it out in the video below).
The lineup has big names like Vampire Weekend, Pretty Lights, The Avett Brothers, MGMT, Robin Thicke, Kaskade, CHVRCHES, City and Colour, Icona Pop and more. Check out the lineup announcement and more information about tickets below:
In association with MCP Presents and Huka Entertainment, Winter Circle Productions (WCP) has announced that the second annual BUKU Music & Art Project will be held on March 8th & 9th, 2013 at Mardi Gras World in downtown New Orleans. This boutique festival offers a spectacular line-up, as well as gourmet, local cuisine and innovative art installations overlooking the Mississippi River. This is not your average music festival. With tickets on sale today, Ticketfly is now the official ticketing partner for the Preakness Stakes, a thoroughbred horse race held every May at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
First contested in 1873, the annual running of the Preakness is a classic American institution. The Preakness is the second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown, between the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. One of the largest single-day sporting events in the United States, the Preakness has hosted up to 121,309 people.
