SXSW in 10 tweets

Since launching 30 years ago, South by Southwest (or SXSW for those in the know) has grown from a charming little music conference into an expansive gathering that includes not just music, but also film and technology, and attracts more than 50,000 attendees to Austin, TX over 10 days each March.

Like many companies, Ticketfly will make its way to Texas to be part of SXSW this year. It’s a great opportunity to reconnect with partners and industry friends. It’s also really fun — a week-long party with a soundtrack performed by the best bands.

Are you a seasoned “South-by” vet, with a proven hangover-avoiding technique and a Google doc with all the bands you plan to catch? Or maybe you’ve never been and are wondering what it’s really like? Either way, you’ll want to check out these ten tweets from the past ten years that we think capture the essence of SXSW.

  1. Word on the street

#FOMO is constant for all who attend SXSW. By the way, Wu-Tang did play a “secret” show in a closed down factory 20 miles outside of town…that started at 4am.

Vote for Ticketfly’s SXSW 2015 Panels, Presentations, & Meetups

South by Southwest 2015 may be eight months away, but the time to vote on content has arrived! This year, we’re going BIG for both the Music and Interactive conferences. Our submissions range from music event discovery and paid advertising to choosing a technology stack, scala best practices, and building concurrent systems. Whether you’re a venue owner, talent buyer, marketer, engineer or technology enthusiast, we’ve got something for you!

VOTE for our Music panel:  How Tech Companies Are Reimagining Event Discovery

Last year we moderated a panel on analyzing and acting on fan data to know and grow fan communities. This year’s panel will focus on how technology companies are using data to drive powerful recommendations and search algorithms, enabling the best live event discovery experiences for fans. Hear from Facebook, Google, DoStuff Media, and Ticketfly about the changing world of event marketing, what’s coming, and what it means for you.

VOTE for our Music presentation:  How Much Should You Spend on Event Marketing?

Are you looking to build awareness? Attract new customers? Sell more tickets to a show? No matter what your goals are or how big or small your event marketing budget may be, learn how to optimize your spend to achieve the results you desire.

VOTE for our Interactive presentation: How to NOT Build a Highly Concurrent System

Building off of our 2013 interactive workshop on how to build scalable software, our 2015 presentation will outline pitfalls to avoid in building a highly concurrent system. Leverage our best practices to learn how to build your system for scale.

VOTE for our Interactive Scala & Reactive Design Meetup

After our 2013 interactive workshop, an enthusiastic group of engineers in attendance took us out for beers to geek-out on scala. We had so much fun, we thought we’d host a formal gathering this year for scala enthusiasts (with beers, of course). If you want network and share knowledge about functional programming and reactive design, this meetup is for you!

VOTE for our Interactive presentation: How to Choose a Tech Stack

New tech stacks are appearing and disappearing, faster than ever. How do you know you’re making the right long-term choice? Hear from Ticketfly’s VP of Technology on past technology decisions throughout his career, a review of what’s out there, and Ticketfly’s approach to technology decisions to scale for the long-term.

Fan Data: The Journey From Analysis to Action

Untitled

Data is the fuel that powers our integrated ticketing and digital marketing engine at Ticketfly, informing our product roadmap by identifying the biggest opportunities to improve life for venues, promoters, and fans. Last year, we launched Ticketfly Fanbase, the first fan analytics suite for live events, which helps our partners analyze vast amounts of fan data to build loyalty and increase ticket sales.

To explore best practices for using fan data to drive business results, our VP of Marketing, Kristina Wallender, brought together a SXSW music panel of experts in Austin, TX earlier this month. Panelists included Alex White (CEO, Next Big Sound), Julien Mitelberg (CEO, Bandsintown), and Nate Auerbach (Music Strategist, Tumblr). Together, the group used their data mining and decision-making experience to answer the question, “How do you analyze fan data to understand, grow, and monetize fan communities?”

Reliving the Memories: SXSW 2014

SXSW Landing

From new artists discovered and partnerships formed to Lone Star‘s consumed and tears shed, this year’s SXSW Music conference was a roller coaster of emotions. To our party partners in crime at The Billions Corporation, ScoreMore Shows, The Echo / Echoplex, Collective Concerts, and Banjos to Beats, we raise a glass to you! And to our knowledgeable comrades at Next Big Sound, Tumblr, and Bandsintown, we can’t wait to share a panel riser with you again. Cheers to you all! Our return to motherland of BBQ and queso can’t come soon enough.

On a more serious note, last week’s horrific car crash reminded us how precious and fragile life is. May those who lost their lives rest in peace, and may those injured and affected return to normalcy soon.

Now to recap our favorite + funniest moments of SXSW 2014!

SXSW 2014 Music Panel: See You in Austin with Bandsintown, Next Big Sound & Klout!

Our SXSW panel has been chosen in the first round of selections! A big thank you goes out to everyone who voted for “The Rise of Influence Marketing in Music” to appear next March in Austin.

We love to share our radical (and practical) ideas about music, shows, and everything in between at SXSW– the beer, BBQ, and breakfast tacos don’t hurt, either. At SXSW ’13, we moderated a panel on “rogue ticketing”, and our top engineers taught attendees how to build scalable software. This year, our panel will discuss the technologies and tools people in the music business can use to recognize and market to your top customers.

Speakers include:

See you at SXSW 2014!

Vote for Ticketfly’s SXSW 2014 Panel

It’s that time of year again. Time to vote for panels at South by Southwest. We’ve all been victim to boring, poorly-designed panels… Don’t let it happen again! Vote for the panels you want to see at SXSW 2014.

This year, we’ve organized our own panel, “The Rise of Influence Marketing in Music,” to discuss the tools you need to recognize and market to your fanbase.

Speakers:

  • Kristina Wallender – Director of Marketing at Ticketfly
  • Julien Mitelberg – CEO of Bandsintown
  • Alex White – CEO of Next Big Sound
  • Don Hoang – Sr. Director of Business & Corporate Development at Klout

Reliving the Memories: SXSW and Canadian Music Week

From 85˚F Austin to -6˚C Toronto, Ticketfly’s San Francisco staff experienced REAL seasons the past few weeks! We’ve never packed a suitcase more creatively. No, really. Have you ever jammed a bathing suit AND snow boots into your carry-on? Didn’t think so…

Let’s toast one last Lone Star and Canadian to our Yankee and Canuck party partners. We love you, Canadian Music WeekCollective Concerts, The Billions CorporationThe Echo / EchoplexMy Old Kentucky BlogBanjos to Beats.

Now to recap our favorite memories and bands of SXSW and CMW (see below) before we get back to work (and start planning for next year)! Check out our SXSW 2013 and Canadian Music Week 2013 Facebook albums and relive the moments with us.
